Dr. Pamela Bea Wilson
Vergun, the translator and editor of A Dimly Burning Wick He Will Not
Quench: Children in the Ruins of Hiroshima, is a Stanford- and Princeton-trained Ph.D. sociologist and policy
analyst. Her Masters Degree in Public Administration is from Princeton
University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. Her
B.A. is from the University of California at Santa Cruz in Language Studies
(Japanese and French).
Dr. VergunŐs experience
includes over ten years conducting social science, evaluation, and policy
research. Her work in the field of Organizational Sociology and Social
Psychology included an examination of medical organizations, examining how
multi-specialty practices serve the needs of patients, including Veterans. She
has also studied the lives of children and families and how their lives are
impacted by health care, education, social services, and the environment.
She
has worked for or on behalf of the U.S. Department of Education, former U.S.
Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare John W. Gardner, the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services, the U.S. Department of Veterans
Affairs, the Copenhagen Business School, the American Institutes for Research,
the University of California at Santa Cruz Agroecology Program, Stanford
University, the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, and
the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. Dr. Vergun has also taught courses in
research methods, applied research, sociology, psychology, and human services.
Dr. Vergun is the proud mom
of two children who joined her family through transracial open international
and domestic adoption, and she is actively involved in several other volunteer
capacities as teacher and community leader. She resides outside of Portland,
Oregon, with her husband and two children.
